This is the version of the 80-400mm lens that Nikon introduced in March 2013. It has the built-in AF-S focusing motor so it will auto-focus with all Nikon DSLR cameras, and it focuses quickly and quietly which makes it much more usable for sports and wildlife photography. It will mount with teleconverters, but consult the Nikon website for details on which functions are supported with various combinations of teleconverters and cameras.
One note: These lenses are notorious for having a fairly stiff zoom mechanism, and the image quality sometimes is not as sharp as we would like. We would suggest checking out the Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM for Nikon as an alternative lens.
