Macro enables you to fill the frame with a small object. This lens will focus down to 7 inches with a reproduction ratio of 1:1, which is great if your creating catalog images of small products. You probably don't want the object to be just 7 inches from the lens when taking nature shots because you're so close that you can get in the way of the light. It's also a good choice if your primary need is a neutral focal length lens and your secondary need is macro capability. It is very, very sharp, and is good for general photography. It has the AF-S motor so it’s compatible with all Nikon cameras. You probably want the 105mm macro lens if your primary need is the macro capability when you're walking around.
