This is the new Nikon 50mm with the AF-S motor that works with all Nikon dSLR cameras, including the D40 and D60 series. A 50mm prime lens on an FX camera is often referred to as “neutral” because it sees objects just about as our eyes do. On a DX camera, it is equivalent to a 75mm which makes it a good portrait lens. It has an f/1.4 and seems about equal in image sharpness to the D version. As with many primes, it is small and lightweight. These features make this lens very versatile indoors and out. It can focus down to 18 inches, it’s about 2 inches long, and it weighs just 10 ounces.
What's the difference between this and the Nikon 50mm AF f/1.4D? This is an AF-S lens which means it has a focusing motor built in. The other major difference is that it does not have an aperture ring, while the D lens does. This is probably not significant for most dSLR users.
D40 and D60 owners: This is the one you want.
