This lens is extremely sharp at all apertures. It’s a great choice for portraits and low light situations. The background blur is wonderful, and many images will be superior to the 85mm f/1.8. It’s big, but it feels great in your hands. This is a great portrait lens, but it’s not perfect for all situations. It focuses rather slowly, which will be a disappointment to sports fans. For sports, we think you’ll be better off with the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8. The manual focus is a focus-by-wire arrangement that uses a focus motor to adjust the lens while you turn the focus ring. The camera must be powered on for manual focus to work, and on certain cameras like 40D, you need to press the trigger button half way down as well. The focus ring turns very freely, which can make you think that something is amiss. It’s not, that’s the way it’s designed. In the end, this lens does produce some very fine photos.
