It can be difficult to choose between this and the Canon 24-70mm zoom. Both are great performers. This one gives you image stabilization, a little more range, and less weight, but you lose a step in aperture. We reach for this one a lot for general shooting if we know the 17-55mm is going to be too wide. It's relatively compact and has a high quality build. The image quality is there. Plan on using a flash if you're indoors and the scene is in motion; the f/4 aperture probably won't gather quite enough light on its own.
