The 300mm f/4 L, like the 200mm f/2.8 L, packs a lot of value into a less bulky package. It’s sharper than the long zooms, it has image stabilization, and it has a retractable lens hood. We like the convenience of quickly sliding the hood out/in for use/storage, or to gain access to a filter. This is a good choice when you need superior sharpness and fairly long reach but can’t be tied down with a larger, heavier lens. It is relatively light at 2.6 lb (1,190g) and is very well built. This one is known for its sharpness wide open at f/4.0 and is optimum at f/4.5. Corner sharpness is very good. Put a little distance between the subject and the background, open up the aperture and your subject will stand out against a smoothly blurred background.
