This has been a popular lens for sports and wildlife photography. It has the built-in AF-S focusing motor so it will auto-focus with all Nikon DSLR cameras, and the focus quick and quiet. It will mount with teleconverters, but you might lose autofocus because the teleconverter restricts the amount of light passing through the lens. However, the subjects are usually a long distance away so the depth of field is very deep and manual focus is not difficult. Consult the Nikon website for details on which functions are supported with various combinations of teleconverters and cameras.
One note: These lenses are notorious for having a fairly stiff zoom mechanism.
