The special thing about this lens (and the 105mm version) is the defocus control which lets you influence out-of-focus effects in the foreground and background when you shoot at wide apertures. This is a favorite lens for portraiture because it can provide a new avenue for adding artistic effects to your photos. Donít confuse this with a soft focus lens because it is not that. The DC allows you to control bokeh. Allow yourself some time to practice before the big shoot. So which is the best portrait lens? It depends on how much of the person you want to capture. Indoors, you may need 35mm for group shots, 50-70mm for a person standing, 85-105mm for a head and shoulders shot, and 135-200mm for head shots. If youíre working outdoors, then plan on using longer lenses. For example, the 70-200mm zoom is an excellent portrait lens for a shooting a person standing outdoors. This 135mm is a very sharp lens so itís great for many other purposes if you donít intend to use the defocus control. Itís not bad as an indoor sports lens, either.
