This is a sharp, high quality wide angle zoom. It's relatively small, light, and the distortion is minimal. If you're a fanatic about sharpness, the Nikkor 14-24mm might have a slight edge on it, but it's bigger, heavier, more expensive, and you can't use filters like you can on the 12-24mm. This zoom range makes it versatile for work in close quarters to wide open landscapes. About the only thing you give up with this lens is a very wide aperture, which usually means you’ll need to use a flash more often with this one. Give this a try if you have never used a wide angle zoom in this range. It will add a new perspective to your photographs. Many photographers believe the secret to interesting photos is wider angles.
