This lens definitely brings the "L" to the 70-300mm lens. It is very nicely built, feels good, operates smoothly, and the image quality is in the L-series class. It feels more compact and manageable than the 70-200mm lenses and the 100-400mm lens. It's not small but it is well balanced when mounted on a camera body, and it is certainly compact enough for a photography enthusiast to carry throughout an event. There is a lock switch to prevent the lens from extending when carrying it, but note that it doesn't come with a tripod ring.
