This lens is a very good performer. It is small and compact to carry, so it makes an excellent accompaniment if you're packing several lenses. It focuses fairly quickly even though it doesn't have a USM motor. However, without a USM it is a little on the noisy side. Besides the largest aperture being f/2, a significant difference between this lens and the Canon 35mm f/1.4L is the quality of the bokeh. The aperture on this lens has only 5 blades, which makes the bokeh look a bit choppy. The f/1.4 version has 8 blades and produces a more soft and pleasing background blur. Overall, this is a very good value.
