This is a great lens in many ways. The images are razor-sharp, it focuses fast, it works equally well for general 60mm shooting and for macro work. The only limitation to note is that it's an EF-S lens which means it only works with camera bodies with the small sensor, not the full frame camera bodies.
The autofocus is quick and accurate, thanks in part to the internal focus design. This means the overall length of the lens doesn't change due to focusing, and the front element doesn't turn.
This is a macro lens with a magnification factor of 1x, or 1:1, enabling the subject to appear at life size on the sensor. The Canon MT-24EX Macro flash will mount on the front. The flash is often necessary with macro work because the depth of field can be very shallow and make it difficult to get an entire object in focus. Stepping down the aperture helps to increase the depth of field, but you lose light.
Even if you are not interested in macro work, this is a great lens for sports, portraits, or general shooting.
