The DJI Ronin-M 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer is a handheld motorized stabilizer for DSLR cameras, mirrorless cameras, and small camcorders (up to 8 lbs). This specific model is our first choice to rent because it's an excellent stabilizer, it's compact, and it's easy for one person to handle. The Ronin-M uses brushless motors that work on three axes; one for side to side roll (keeping the horizon), one for pan and one for tilt. This system has a precision control of ±0.02° and will correct the finest movements with a tilt range of 105⁰ up / 165⁰ down plus a roll range of ±110⁰. The lithium-polymer battery that will power the unit for up to six hours.

A great feature of this stabilizer is that it supports dual operator shooting; one person can control the stabilizer and another can manually aim the camera using the radio control transmitter. There is also an optional thumb controller that enables a single operator to carry the unit and control the camera angles via a small joystick.

The Ronin-M has three operation modes making it versatile for use in multiple situations. Underslung Mode places the camera closer to the ground. Upright Mode places the camera higher so it's easier raise the camera above a crowd. Briefcase Mode is for moving though narrow spaces.

It comes with a folding stand that is used for balancing the camera and holding the unit when not in use. Balancing can be completed without tools for quick and easy set-up and when adjustments are necessary due to changing lenses. The gimbal unit has a universal mounting so it can be detached from the handle for mounting on jibs, cranes, tripods, vehicle mounts, and other types of camera support equipment.

Ronin-M Setup

A bluetooth-enabled mobile device (phone or tablet) is required to set up and operate the Ronin-M. You will need to download the DJI Ronin Assistant app onto your device.
Search"DJI Ronin Assistant" on the app store and follow the instructions for installation.
You will be prompted to Login/Register with DJI to use the app. Enter an email and choose a password.

    This app enables you to:
  • Auto-tune the sensitivity of the Ronin-M based on the weight and weight distribution or your camera after you have balanced it
  • Adjust the Smoothtrack parameters to suit your preference
  • Enable and configure Second Operator Control
  • Run various diagnostics and generate stats

Bluetooth connection: After the app is installed, turn on the Ronin-M and establish the bluetooth connection. A window will open in the app that displays the device ID and asks for the password. These have been pre-set. Note that they are case specific.
