Canon makes 5 different 70-200mm lenses. This is the original version of one with the big f/2.8 aperture AND image stabilization. It's tried and true and has served both full-frame and cropped-frame shooters for several years and everyone loved it. Then Canon introduced the mark II version. The main improvements are faster auto-focus and improved image sharpness in the corners of the image (there really wasn't much room for improvement in the center of the image.) Both versions remain popular. This original version is offered at a lower rental rate and is an appropriate choice in certain situations such as portraits when the corners of the images are not intended to be in sharp focus anyway. We should stress that the focusing abilities of the original version are very good, but the mark II is better in the corners.
Everything works well with this lens; The image quality, the image stabilization, very good auto-focus speed, the very pleasing background blur, and the construction is top notch. It is a bit on the large and heavy side, but not objectionable. It works well on both full-frame and cropped-frame cameras.
